The Baseball Federation of Japan submitted a request to have NPB players take part in two international tournaments later this year: the IBAF Intercontinental Cup that takes place in October and the Asian Games that take place in November.
This actually made the headlines a few days ago. But back then it was about a timing issue that wouldn't allow amateur players to take part in the Asian Games (no mention of the Intercontinental Cup). Now it seems as if the reason for sending pro players to either international tournament has more to do with winning a medal because that might help bring baseball back into the Olympics. And it seems the Japanese Olympic Committee agrees.
I'm not quite sure if I understand the reasoning, but a roster full of pro players will obviously increase Japan's chances for a medal.
