...Ikusei coach Tomas De La Rosa threw roasted soybeans on Wednesday as part of a Japanese ceremony that takes place on Setsubun.

The saying goes, you throw roasted soybeans toward evil spirits and push them away from the house to make room for lucky spirits.

De La Rosa jokingly threw some towards head coach Shigekazu Mori.

...Masahiro Yamamoto threw 51 pitches to Tony Blanco and Dionys Cesar during BP on Tuesday.

...Ryota Arai took part in early fielding practice on Wednesday.

...Edward Valdez was one of eight pitchers that took the mound for BP on Tuesday and threw about 44 pitches (at 80% capacity) to Tetsuya Tani and Yohei Ohshima; additionally, Sponichi says Valdez gave up 6 potential base hits while Nikkan Sports goes with 8.

Valdez has a couple of things going for him, like a fastball that moves like a cutter and a delivery that makes it difficult to read the ball coming out of his hand.  He also seems to have pretty good control.  A Giants' scout in the stands said that he reminded him of Dicky Gonzalez and that could have some success in the NPB.
