...Eight players, including Kenji Ohtonari, Yusuke Kosai, and Hiroaki Takaya, worked out on their day off on Friday.  Ohtonari is scheduled to start an intra-squad game on Saturday.  He spent about an hour and a half running and playing catch.  Kosai and Takaya took soft toss BP.

...Sadaharu Oh told reporters on Thursday that he hoped Nobuhiko Matsunaka wasn't feeling rushed into getting ready for the regular season.  He also told Matsunaka in person that he wanted him to focus on getting better first and foremost.

On Thursday, Matsunaka spent about 30 minutes walking.  He also played some catch, hit some soft toss, and spent some time in the batting cages.

...Hiroki Yamamda (ikusei) apparently got Oh's attention after tossing 2 shutout innings during an intra-squad practice game on the 16th.  Oh was set to watch the Ni-gun team play Yakult on the 20th, but after hearing that Yamada will likely be pitching again during an Ichi-gun intra-squad game on the same day, may end up watching him pitch instead.

...Additional notes from Thursday's practice game against the KIA Tigers:

Shingo Tatsumi didn't give up any hits during his 3 shutout innings of work.  He did walk 1 batter in the 5th though.

Sho Iwasaki featured a 146km/h fastball and a curve in the 100km/h range during the game.  Of the three hits he surrendered, two were infield hits.

Bum-Ho Lee's first hit also drove in a run.

Nobuhiro Matsuda started at first and batted 4th.  He went 0-for-4.  Matsuda took over at third after Lee was taken out of the game in the 7th.

Shuhei Fukuda made a couple of questionable plays in the 9th inning.

...Tatsumi, Iwasaki, and Shota Ohba are vying for the number 5 spot in the rotation.  All three will likely pitch again during upcoming Ni-gun practice games on the 23rd and 24th.

...It appears Nobuhiro Matsuda has a slight edge over Bum-Ho Lee at third base.

...Fukuda's questionable plays at third in Thursday's practice game cost him his shot at staying at Ichi-gun.  The Hawks decided to demote Fukuda to Ni-gun.  Keisuke Kaneko will be called up to take Fukuda's spot on the roster.

...Hiroki Kokubo, Hitoshi Tamura, and Jose Ortiz worked out at the secondary field on Thursday.  After taking BP, Kokubo spent some time running back and forth between the foul poles; Tamura returned to the indoor training facilities for more BP in the cages.

...Shinsuke Ogura didn't attend practice on Thursday due to a high fever that was brought on by his tonsillitis.  According to the Hawks, he will need about a week of rest.

...Nagisa Arakaki threw 100 pitches in a bullpen session on Thursday (70 to check on his mechanics and another 30 thrown lightly).

...Tsuyoshi Wada threw the change-up (along with other pitches) during his bullpen session on Thursday.  Significant because it was the first time he threw the change since he felt some stiffness in his left elbow.  He later told reporters he didn't feel anything wrong with his left elbow.
