Orix Buffaloes: Day Off

...14 players worked out on the team's off day on Tuesday.

=== 2/23/2010 4:35pm JST

...Alex Cabrera, Aarom Baldiris, Jon Leicester, and Greg LaRocca all decided to work out on their day off Tuesday.  This despite Akinobu Okada asking all his players to take the day off to rest.  Okada is a little concerned about how tired players might be at this point during Spring camp and even cut general practice short on Monday (general practice usually ends at 6pm but Okada ended it at a little past 3pm).

Okada also appears to be surprised at how much Cabrera has changed this year -- not only did he arrive for Spring camp in time, but he's also spent three of his days off working out AND he's been giving hitting pointers out to other players on the team (specifically Baldiris and Takahiro Okada).  Needless to say, Okada isn't complaining about Cabrera's metamorphosis.

...Leicester threw about 55 pitches as BP pitcher to LaRocca and Shogo Akada on Tuesday.

...The Buffaloes may begin the season with Chihiro Kaneko, Shogo Yamamoto, and Hiroshi Kisanuki.

...Norihiro Akahoshi was apparently paid off in ramen noodles, a rice ball, and some bread (about 1,000 yen).

    Perhaps Cabrera realizes he no longer has Tuffy’s presence in the lineup to work with, so he’ll probably be facing some slightly tougher pitching this season. If LaRocca stays healthy, he might provide that presence. Last season was just painful to watch with all three of them out at one point or another.

      That’s possible. But I’m wondering if it might have to do with his future. Cabrera has been in Japan for quite some time now. I’m guessing he enjoys it here. At 38, he’s certainly on the tail end of his career. With the time he’s spending on players like Baldiris and T-Okada, I wonder if he might be thinking of a possible future as a coach.
