General NPB News: Umpires and NPB still trying to work out agreement

...The Umpires Union and the NPB met on the 5th to continue deliberations on their business provisions.  Due to an incomplete proposal from the NPB that did not include specific language on vacation days and work hours, no agreement was reached.  The two sides will meet again on the 29th.

...Shigeyuki Takahashi passed away on Monday (3/1) at 4pm due to heart failure.  He was 64.  Funeral services will take place on the 6th amongst close family and relatives.

Takahashi spent his entire 16-year playing career with the Taiyo Whales.  He won the rookie of the year award in 1964 and made it to the All-Star game three times (1964, 1965, 1978).  Takahashi likely had his best year in 1965 when he went 21-17 while tossing 277.1 innings and ending the season with  2.40 ERA (1.04 WHIP).

After retiring in 1980, Takahashi went on to become a coach with the Hanshin Tigers (1981-1991, 1995-1997).
