...Tatsunori Hara could inform either Dicky Gonzalez or Tetsuya Utsumi of their opening day start as early as the 16th. If Utsumi gets the call, it will be his second opening day start of his career (his last opening day start came back in 2007).
The announcement could also wait until after the two pitch their final exhibition games of the pre-season (20th and 21st, respectively, vs Yokohama Bay Stars at Tokyo Dome).
...Alex Ramirez told reporters after Sunday's game against the Hanshin Tigers that he needs to study up on Kenji Johjima. In the past, Ramirez has spent time studying catchers in order to see if there are any patterns he can find. He also tries to "feel them" moving around behind him for hints on where pitches might be coming.
...Hayato Sakamoto hit a curve for a home run on Sunday. Sakamoto told reporters that he was waiting for a fastball, but managed to stay back on the pitch long enough to hit a home run. Johjima also offered his take:
That was just poor leading skills on my part. While you can't hit home runs unless it's a mistake pitch, you can throw a mistake pitch without it becoming a home run. I think I got a better feel for the batters now. It was a good practice.
