9 147 37 33 7 0 13 0 1 2 1 0 5 3

Notes: This was Toshiya Sugiuchi's first victory against Yu Darvish and first opening day victory in two tries. ... Hiroki Kokubo had a big day at the plate and was pretty much involved in every scoring opportunity the Hawks had, save for perhaps their run in the 9th.  Interestingly enough, Kokubo told reporters prior to the game that the team was going to score 5 runs. ... Munenori Kawasaki showed off his legs in the game with two stolen bases off Darvish. ... This was Darvish's second consecutive opening day loss. ... The Fighters quickly pulled Sho Nakata after his 2 run single in the 6th.  Wonder if it had anything to do with making sure he ended his first opening day on a positive note.

9 157 37 33 7 0 11 3 1 0 0 0 1 1

Notes: Both starters graduated from the same high school: Yokohama High School.    The last time two pitchers from the same high school started an opening day game was when Masumi Kuwata (YOM) faced Takao Obana (YAK) in 4/8/1989 -- both were PL Gakuen HS graduates. ... Yoshihisa Naruse really only made two mistakes in the game.  Unfortunately, they also resulted in two home runs, just enough to give the victory to the Seibu Lions in 9. ... The Marines have lost their last 5 consecutive opening day games. ... Acting owner Akio Shigemitsu dropped by Seibu Dome before the game to wish Norifumi Nishimura luck. ... Hiroyuki Nakajima apparently told his teammates he was going to hit a home run right before his at bat in the 6th.

Notes: The Eagles held a meeting before the game. Owner Toru Shimada also attended. ... This was the first opening day complete game victory for Orix since 2000 when Hiroshi Kobayashi was the winning pitcher. ... Chihiro Kaneko gave Akinobu Okada the game ball.  Okada told reporters that this was the ideal way to start the season. ... Alex Cabrera was not in the starting line-up.  The reason isn't known.  Okada would only tell reporters that he was in the dugout during the game and that he might play on Sunday.
