...Kazuya Fukuura hit his 100th career home run off Takayuki Kishi (SEI) in the third inning on Monday. He becomes the 258th NPB player to hit 100. He hit his first career home run off Hisanori Yokota (SEI) on 8/1/1997.
...Tae-Kyun Kim picked up his first official hit in his third at bat on Monday. Up until that hit, he went 0-for-10 with 7 strikeouts (including 6 to start the season).
Kim also became just the fourth player, since the start of the two leagues, to strike out four times on opening day and play in the second game of the season. The other three: Shigeo Nagashima (YOM) in 1958, Norihiro Komada (YOK) in 1996, and Troy Neel (ORI) in 1997. Of the three, Nagashima was the only player to strike out in the second game (his fourth at bat). So Kim also becomes the first player to start the regular season with 6 consecutive strikeouts. Domingo Guzman (YOK) did begin his Japanese career in 2003 by striking out in 18 consecutive at bats.
...Norifumi Nishimura did win a game once before: On 7/28/2004, Bobby Valentine returned to the US to attend to personal matters and Nishimura managed and won the game.
It seems Nishimura also had all the starting players autograph the game winning ball he was given.
