Ryota Igarashi, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Hideki Matsui

by on Mar.24, 2010 @ 2:52 pm, under MLB

Ryota Igarashi tossed a scoreless inning against the Atlanta Braves on the 23rd.  He did not give up a run and gave up 1 hit and walked 1.  Igarashi was also the winning pitcher on record.  He topped out at 95mph (153km/h).

Hisanori Takahashi is scheduled to start a game against the Washington Nationals on the 27th.  He was supposed to pitch on the 23rd, but was given more time off to rest.

Ichiro Suzuki started in right and batted lead-off against the Angels on the 23rd.  He went 1-for-4: infield single and stolen base, walk, three ground outs to first.  Ichiro also apparently made a nice over the shoulder catch in the 2nd (there's a replay of the catch at the MLB website).

Koji Uehara played a light game of catch and a did a little running on the 23rd.  He told reporters that while he is feeling better, he's still afraid of a possible setback.

===

Kenshin Kawakami did not travel with the team for their road game on the 23rd.  Instead, he checked on his delivery during a game of catch.  He gave up two home runs during his last start without a bullpen session two days before his last game, so he plans on going back to throwing a bullpen two days before his next game.

Hideki Matsui, and a number of other veterans, did not accompany the team on their road game against the Seattle Mariners on the 23rd.  Because of the rain, practice was held indoors and lasted only about an hour.  One day after playing defense for the first time since 2008, Matsui told reporters he felt fine.

Daisuke Matsuzaka threw 76 pitches to a squatting catcher during a bullpen session on the 23rd.  Partway through the session, they closed off his session to the media.  He is still set to pitch in an exhibition game on the 25th.

Hideki Okajima pitched 1.2 scoreless innings against the Minnesota Twins on the 23rd and gave up a hit and struck out one.

Both Kazuo Matsui (HOU) and Akinori Iwamura (PIT) started at second and batted second against each other's team on the 23rd.  Matsui went 3-for-3: infield single, RBI double to right, single to right; he also had a stolen base.  Iwamura went 1-for-3: strikeout, strikeout, double.

Toshihisa Nishi is currently working out at Yokohama.  He earlier signed a contract with the Lancaster Barnstormers (his salary is apparently $2,600 a month).  Nishi told reporters that he would like to pursue a career as a coach / manager and this his experience in the US could only help.  The Barnstormers season begins on 4/22.
