Junichi Tazawa, Hideki Matsui, Ryota Igarashi

by on Apr.02, 2010 @ 3:22 pm, under MLB

It appears as though Junichi Tazawa will have Tommy John surgery on the 6th.  That means his 2010 season is effectively over.  Tough break for Tazawa.

Both Ryota Igarashi and Hisanori Takahashi pitched against the Washington Nationals on the 1st.

Igarashi entered the game in the 5th with two outs and tossed 0.2 innings.  He gave up 2 runs (both earned) on 1 hit (a double) and 1 walk (to go along with a stolen base).  Seems he struggled with control of his fork.

Takahashi entered the game in the 8th with 1 out and tossed 0.2 shutout innings.  He did not allow any hits.  Takahashi told reporters his shoulder felt great and that he felt he was able to throw well.  He earned his "first" hold.

Kazuo Matsui started at second and batted seventh against the Detroit Tigers on the 1st.  He went 0-for-2: ground out to short, fly out to short.  Matsui was taken out of the game in the 6th on defense.

===

Akinori Iwamura started at second and batted first against the Philadelphia Phillies on the 1st.  He went 0-for-2: strike out looking, strike out swinging.

===

Kosuke Fukudome started in right and batted second against the Colorado Rockies on the 1st.  He went 0-for-4: fly out to center, fly out to right, DP, ground out to short.  Fukudome was removed from the game in the 9th on defense.

Fukudome also made a nice play on defense in the 2nd: he threw out a runner trying to stretch a single into the double.

===

About (Japanese) 100 reporters are expected to cover Hideki Matsui at the start of the regular season.

Matsui was the starting DH and batted fourth against the San Diego Padres on the 1st.  He went 1-for-3: RBI single, striek out, strike out.

Matsui had the day off on the 31st and used it to get settled in at Anaheim.

===

Hiroki Kuroda tossed 36 pitches in the bullpen on the 1st.  He'll likely pitch on the third against the Angels -- his last appearance before the start of the regular season.

===

Takashi Saito will likely pitch on the 2nd against the Chicago White Sox.
