...When is a sprained ankle not a sprained ankle? Ask Atsushi Nomi. It seems he suffered a fracture in his right foot (右足楔状骨剥離骨折) and it could be a month before Nomi is ready to start throwing again.
Said pitching coach Takashi Yamaguchi, "I'm shocked because the initial report didn't say anything about a fracture. I think a return during Inter-league play is impossible. ... We're thinking in months (instead of days) right now for when he'll be ready to start throwing again."
...Kentaro Sekimoto blasted a pinch-hit home run during last night's (5/2) game against the Yomiuri Giants. The home run ended up being the difference in the game that allowed the Tigers to complete their first 3-game sweep against the Giants since 9/9/2007 (first at Koshien since 7/1/2004). Interestingly enough, the last time Sekimoto hit a pinch-hit home run was back on 5/2/2006, also against the Yomiuri Giants (it also happened to be a walk-off homer).
Sekimoto now has 4 pinch-hit home runs, three of which have come against the Giants. The three pinch-hit homers against the Giants also ties a club high.
...Atsushi Nomi apparently suffered a right ankle sprain (no damage to the bones) and will likely miss his next start (which would probably have been against the Hiroshima Carp on 5/9). As such, there's a good chance Nomi could be taken off the active roster.
...Shunsuke Fujikawa picked up his first pro hit on Sunday night. The hit came in the 7th inning with 2 outs against Tetsuya Yamaguchi and was a triple to center. Fujikawa had gone hitless in his first 11 trips to the plate.
