An online version of the the Darvish article is now up at Sponichi. Here the quote from Darvish's father:
"[Tellem] is someone Yu knows before becoming a pro, so it's like they met casually. [Yu] has turned to [Tellem] for advice on a number of occasions over the years. ... It isn't like there's a contract between them. And Yu hasn't made a clear-cut decision on the Majors yet, not has he informed the club about anything."
When the media approached Darvish about their meeting last year, he replied, "No comment."
I was just watching the morning newspaper headline segment on TV (Fuji I think) when they made mention of a headline from today's Sponichi regarding Yu Darvish's father admitting to an Arn Tellem connection. The segment was extremely brief and I only managed to catch the last portion of it, but based on what I could gather, if Darvish does decide to head to the Majors, the groundwork is in place.
In doing some poking around, I did find an article at Chunichi Shimbun that is claiming Darvish is seriously considering a move to the Majors with Tellem as his agent. According to the report, Tellem visited Darvish (and his father) back in December 2009 to discuss his interest in playing in the US.
The Yankees, Red Sox, Rangers, Mariners, Giants, Dodgers, Mets, and Angels are mentioned in the article. A quote from someone connected to the Yankees estimates that the posting fee could go as high as $60M.
And while I'm not 100% sure about this, it seems Tellem also hired Tom O'Malley (former Hanshin player and scout) in order to help strengthen his relations with Japanese players.
