Kaz Matsui released by the Houston Astros

by on May.20, 2010 @ 5:40 pm, under MLB

The Astros released Kazuo Matsui on the 19th (or more accurately, placed him on waivers).   According to reports, Matsui was informed of the clubs decision after the game on the 19th by the general manager.

If no teams claim Matsui by the 24th, he will become an unrestricted free agent.

Which begs the question, what will Matsui do next?  Does he stick it out and see if he can find another suitor in the States, or does he make a return to the NPB?

I see Kaz Matsui either re-uniting with the Colorado Rockies and his former mates or he may even draw interest with the Seattle Mariners. There will be a suitor for Kaz Matsui down the road. He still has a lot left in the basement that he wants to display on the diamond before he retires from MLB.

Yeah, I don’t think the MLB is done with Kaz Matsui yet. There has to be a team or two that can still use a player like him.

The only question is, in what capacity? Are there teams that still want to take a chance on him as a regular? Or more as a infield utility player of sorts?

If he were to return to Japan, he’d likely be a starter. He’d also probably get a fairly cushy contract.

It’ll be interesting to see where he ends up.
