Nippon Ham Fighters: May 20, 2010

by on May.20, 2010 @ 3:38 pm, under NPB

...Tomohiro Nioka nailed a home run against his 12th NPB club last night against the Yomiuri Giants.  Nioka also happens to be 6-for-13 against his former team.

Incidentally, Nioka became the 17th player to hit home runs against 12 different NPB clubs (5 have hit home runs against 13 different NPB clubs).  Prior to Inter-league play, there were only three players that had hit homers against all teams in the NPB.

...Sponichi makes note of the salary difference between the Fighters' starter Hirotoshi Masui and the Giants starting-lineup: 9M yen (Masui) vs about 2B yen (Yomiuri).

Speaking of Masui, 15 of the 19 outs he recorded last night came on fastballs, 8 of which were fly balls.  And of the 5 hits he allowed, only one came off a fastball.  Seems the Giants had a tough time reading the fastball (something that was also mentioned during the game broadcast last night).

If I’m reading the article correctly (or if Google Translate is translating it properly), the three guys to homer against all 12 teams before inter league play are Shinich Etoh, Masaru Tomita and Hideji Katoh. I’m stunned that Ochiai didn’t do it.

Yep, that’s correct. Those are the only three players that had done it prior to Inter-league play.

You’d think Ochiai would be on that list, but he actually never hit a home run against Lotte.

Now that I look it up, he only hit 5 home runs for the Fighters in 1997-98, which would have been his only opportunity to hit one against Lotte.
