Yakult Swallows: May 23, 2010

by on May.23, 2010 @ 8:30 pm, under NPB

...The Swallows announced earlier today that they hired Takao Ise to be a batting adviser for the team.  Ise will be allowed to continue his work as a baseball analyst while doling out hitting advice.  He'll then likely become a full-time coach in August.  Ise's contract is good for the length of the current season and is estimated to be worth about 10M yen.

Not wanting to waste any time, Ise attended team practice today to get a better feel for where all the players are.  Seems he also spent some time watching Jamie D'Antona and Aaron Guiel.

It’s brutal how the Swallows and the media are tossing Guiel and D’Antona under the bus this year, especially given how big a part they both were of the Swallow’s surprise playoff run last season. This is a team that has exactly two regulars hitting over .260 – Aoki and Tanaka. To dump the problems the team is having entirely on these two guys like they seem to be doing is reprehensible.

I don’t know if you remember this, but the media and the Swallows were pretty tough on the two last year as well. Aoki also had a slow start last year.

Throw in a Tigers’ team that’s winning and better teams in the Bay Stars team and Carp team, and you have a league that isn’t quite as forgiving as it was last year.
