5/31/2010: Takashi Saito, Kazuo Matsui

Games from the 30th:

Angels 9 - Mariners 7
Hideki Matsui started in left and batted fourth.  He went 1-for-3: 2-run homer, ground out to first, fly out to short, catcher interference and RBI, walk.  Matsui was replaced by a pinch-runner after his walk.

Ichiro Suzuki started in right and batted first.  He went 2-for-3: ground out to first, RBI single to center, walk, intentional walk, double to right-center.

Cardinals 9 - Cubs 1
Kosuke Fukudome started in right and batted first.  He went 0-for-4: fly out to center, strikeout swinging, ground out to the pitcher, ground out to second.

Braves 5 - Pirates 2
Akinori Iwamura started at second and batted 8th.  He went 1-for-3: ground out to the pitcher, single to left, strikeout swinging.  Iwamura was taken out of the game in the 7th on defense.

Kenshin Kawakami started the game and gave up 2 runs over 6.2 innings of work.  He did not figure into the final decision.  Final line: 6.2 IP, 25 BF, 4 H, 2 SO, 2 BB, 2 R, 2 ER.

Takashi Saito entered the game in the 8th with the score tied at 2 and tossed a 1-2-3 inning.  He ended up being the winning pitcher on record. Final line: 1.0 IP, 3 BF, 0 H, 2 SO, 0 BB, 0 R, 0 ER.

In getting the win, Saito became the older Japanese pitcher to win a game in the Majors at 40 years and 3 months.  Keiichi Yabu was the previous record-holder at 39 years and 8 months (6/16/2008 vs the Tigers).


Kazuo Matsui started at second and batted first against the triple-A Portland Beavers on the 30th.  He went 1-for-5.
