6/6/2010: Ichiro scores his 1,000th career MLB run

by on Jun.06, 2010 @ 2:26 pm, under MLB

Games from the 5th:

Angels 11 - Mariners 2
Ichiro Suzuki started in right and batted first.  He went 2-for-3: infield single, walk, double to right, ground out to short.

Ichiro also scored his 1,000th career MLB run in the 5th inning.  For players that got their start in 2001, Ichiro and Albert Pujols are the only two that have managed to reach 1,000.  Throw in his 658 runs from his Orix days and Ichiro now has a combined 1,658 runs scored in his career -- that's good for second on the All-time NPB list (behing Sadaharu Oh's 1967).

Ichiro has also hit safely in 9 straight games.

Hideki Matsui was the starting DH and batted fifth.  He went 0-for-4: fly out to center, line out to first, strikeout swinging, walk (RBI), fly out to left.

Matsui's multi-hit hitting streak ended at 4 games, as did his getting on base in consecutive trips to the plate (10).

Pirates 6 - Giants 3
Akinori Iwamura entered the game as a pinch-hitter for the pitcher in the 8th inning and recorded his single to left.  He did not take the field in the top of the inning.

Lou Piniella told the media that he plans on giving Tyler Colvin more playing time.  That means Kosuke Fukudome will likely get fewer chances to play.

Orioles pitching coach Rick Kranitz on Koji Uehara's current status: "The pain appears to be gone so we think he'll be able to start practicing with a ball again.  What happens next will depend on how he does, but we think he can make it off the DL a lot sooner than before."

Hiroki Kuroda tossed 36 pitches in the bullpen on the 5th in preparation for his start against the Cardinals on the 8th.

Daisuke Matsuzaka tossed 76 pitches in the bullpen on the 4th in preparation for this start against the Indians on the 7th.  Matsuzaka will be going for his 150th NBP / MLB combined win (108 NPB wins and 41 MLB wins).

Kazuo Matsui played in a triple-A game against the Salt Lake Bees on the 6th.  He started at second and batted first in the game and went 1-for-5 with a double, 2 RBI, and one strikeout.

The Braves placed Takashi Saito on the 15-day DL.

Rumor: Bobby Valetine's name has apparently come up as a possible candidate for the Orioles' managing job.
