All Japan University Championships – Day One Notes

...Hokkaido University beat Shikoku University 3-1 and is advancing to the second round for the first time in school history.  Hokkaido has been to the championships three other times in the past and this is their first victory.  Tomoya Ishiyama, staff ace, got the complete game victory (9 IP, 32 BF, 4 H, 7 SO, 1 BB).

...Bukkyo University's Yudai Ono tossed a 2-hit shutout against Tohoku Fukushi University yesterday (9 IP, 32 BF, 2 H, 12 SO, 2 BB).  He also struck out 12 batters and topped out at 151km/h.  110 scouts from 20 clubs (12 NPB and 8 MLB) were at the game watching him.

...Tatsunori Hara's nephew, Tomoyuki Sugano (Tokai University), gave up just one run over 8 innings to beat Hakuoh University in an 8-1 called game (8 IP, 27 BF, 3 H, 5 SO, 0 BB).  Sugano also topped out at 154km/h during his start.  Eight domestic clubs, including the Yomiuri Giants, Yokohama Bays Stars, and Chiba Lotte Marines, and six MLB clubs, including the New York Mets and Tampa Bay Rays, were in the stands.

Said Lotte scout, "Right now, he's the number one right-handed prospect.  And the fact that he still has room for improvement is a plus."  Bay Stars' scout added, "All I can say is that he's good.  He throws without effort and throws quality pitches."

...Ryo Akiyoshi (Chuo Gakuin University) tossed a 2-hit shutout against Kyushu Kyoritsu University (9 IP, 31 BF, 2 H, 4 SO, 3 BB); he also topped out at 147km/h.  Kyushu's first-year student Daichi Osera entered the game partway through the 6th and held his own (3 IP, 10 BF, 3 H, 2 SO, 0 BB).  He also topped out at 151km/h.

...Daiki Tomei (Toin University of Yokohama) threw a 4-hit, 1-0 shutout against Achi Gakuin University (9 IP, 31 BF, 4 H, 7 SO, 0 BB).  Hiroshi Urano (Aichi) got the short end of the stick and was saddled with the loss (8 IP, 30 BF, 5 H, 11 SO, 1 BB).
