Mayor of BungoOno turns down request to use baseball field

The Mayor of BungoOno, Yusuke Hashimoto, apparently turned down a request to use a baseball field out of fear of the spread of foot-and-mouth disease.

According to a number of published reports, organizers of a baseball tournament for junior high school students contacted the city of BungoOno seeking permission to use their baseball field.  Hashimoto caught wind that two teams in the tournament were from Miyazaki and turned down the request, citing concerns about the risk of foot-and-mouth disease spreading into his city (Sponichi also notes that the baseball field is only about 500 meters away from farm land).

Needless to say, the people of Miyazaki and the prefectural mayor of Miyazaki aren't very happy and feel that the city of BungoOno is being too cautious and protective.

Said Miyazaki prefectural mayor, Hideo Higashikokubaru, "There should be no concerns [of the disease spreading if proper precautions] are taken.  I hope they turn things down a notch."

During a press conference on Thursday, Hashimoto did say that he would be willing to relax the rules a bit if he were instructed to do so by people from higher up.

Every time a politician is involved with this foot and mouth disease problem, I read it as “foot in mouth disease,” very common among politicians the world over.
