Said owner Hajime Matsuda, "This team has a lot of problems that have nothing to do with how it is managed on the field. I feel sorry for him with regards to some aspects of his position. ... The long-term plan is for this team to become stronger, and it would be great if he can at least do that."
...Mike Schultz, currently in the US, had surgery on his back (herniated disk) recently and will be out for at least 3 months (until he can start throwing again). It would seem a return this season is unlikely. Schultz signed a two year contract with the Carp this past December, with the second year being an option year held by Hiroshima. Whether or not the option is exercised will depend on how well he's able to recover from the surgery.
