One pitch for the win

by on Aug.02, 2010 @ 9:49 am, under NPB

Last night, Hiroki Sanada became the 29th pitcher in NPB history (15th in the Central League and 3rd in Yokohama franchise history) to toss just one pitch and record a victory.

With the score tied at one and runners on first and second and 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th, the Bay Stars called on Sanada to get the final out of the inning.  Working economically, Sanada tossed just one pitch and got Hiroyasu Tanaka (YAK) to ground out to short.  In the top of the 8th, the Bay Stars managed to push 2 runs across the plate (without a hit) and that made Sanada the winning pitcher on the night.

The last pitcher to record a win on one pitch: Akio Shimizu (ORI) on 8/25/2009 vs the Nippon Ham Fighters.  And the last pitcher in the CL to win on one pitch: Masato Kobayashi (CHU) on 4/24/2009 vs the Yomiuri Giants.

And the two other Yokohama pitchers to record a win on one pitch: Masao Morinaka on 5/25/2000 vs the Yomiuri Giants and Yoshihiro Doi on 7/7/2004 also vs the Yomiuri Giants.
