From Magic Number to Clinch Number?

by on Aug.11, 2010 @ 2:27 am, under NPB

Not exactly sure what spurred the change from Magic Number to Crunch Clinch Number, but it seems the change was made at some point between the end of last season and this season.

In any case, a number of reports are already reporting the Clinch Numbers for a number of teams.

They are:

Giants 30

Tigers 33

Lions 27

Hawks 28

Pretty sure that’s supposed to be “Clinch Number” – it’s the teams’ magic numbers for clinching a spot in the Climax Series.

      Don’t I feel silly.

Yes, you’re right, it’s Clinch Number. I guess I was just seeing what I wanted to see. :p

That still doesn’t explain why they felt they had to make up a new name though.

I think they’re probably trying to emphasize the difference between the true Magic Number (the one for winning the league pennant) and the “Climax Series Magic Number” (the one that guarantees you a spot in the top three and a trip to the playoffs). I agree though, it’s kind of a silly name. :)

Yeah, that’s probably what it is.

I guess it sort of goes along with their renaming of the Climax Series First Stage and Climax Series 2nd Stage to Climax Series First Stage and Climax Series Final Stage, respectively.

In the end, it seems like making more work for everyone involved. But maybe that was the point.
