Takumi Akiyama headed to the active roster?

by on Aug.16, 2010 @ 2:03 pm, under NPB

It appears Takumi Akiyama is on his way to joining the active roster since the Tigers need another starter with Naoto Tsuru moving into the bullpen.  Not exactly sure when the start will come, but it will probably be sometime during the team's next 6-game stretch (that begins tomorrow).

The last Tiger pitcher drafted out of high school to pitch in his first year was Koji Okamoto on 10/6/2000 (vs Yakult).

On a side note (and tot that anyone probably cares), but I'm rooting for Akiyama because he's a graduate of my paternal grandmother's Alma mater, Saijo High School.

Akiyama's 2010 Ni-gun numbers:

G W L Sv CG ShO WPCT BF IP H HR BB IBB HBP SO WP BK R ER ERA
12 2 2 0 0 0 .500 242 58.2 47 5 20 2 1 40 2 0 22 14 2.15

Heh, I’ve met the Assistant Language Teacher that’s working at Saijo right now. He says Akiyama’s a beast. I saw him pitch a 2-gun game against Chunichi last week – pretty orthodox stuff, but he gets guys out. Should be interesting to see if the Giants blow him apart or if he can work through that minefield of a lineup.

With the way the Giants are playing right now, a start against them might be a blessing in disguise.
