Giancarlo Alvarado (HIR) tied an NPB record yesterday when he hit three batters in one inning.
Alvarado had some control problems in the first inning yesterday against the Hanshin Tigers. He hit the first two batters he faced before walking the third batter to load the bases. Alvardo then gave up a 2-run single before getting Craig Brazell into ground into a 4-6-3 double play. While it seemed like the worst was over, Alvardo then went on to walk Tomoaki Kanemoto and hit Kenji Jojima to re-load the bases. The inning finally ended with Alvardo striking Shunsuke Fujikawa out looking.
Alvarado threw a total 32 pitches in the inning -- 16 balls, 16 strikes.
Note: Takashi Nishimoto set the original record in 1979. It seems Alvarado and Nishimoto are the only two pitchers that have hit three batters in one inning.
