Craig Brazell (HAN) was doubled off first on a line out to short by Ryo Asai in the bottom of the 10th inning and was quickly tossed from the game. The Tigers had actually run out of position players when they sent Shinji Komiyama in to pinch-run for Shinjiro Hiyama in the bottom of the 9th.
And so here is what the Tigers did in the top of the 11th inning:
For the lead-off hitter Masahiko Morino (left-handed hitter):
Ken Nishimura (a pitcher) takes over in RF; Keiichi Hirano moves from RF to LF; Shunsuke Fujikawa moves from LF to CF; Ryo Asai moves from CF to 1B.
For the second hitter, Kazuhiro Wada (right-handed hitter):
Nishimura (a pitcher) moves from LF to RF; Hirano moves from LF to RF.
And for the third hitter and fourth hitters of the inning, pinch-hitter Kei Nomoto (left-handed hitter) and Atsushi Fujii (switch-hitter batting left with Kyuji Fujikawa on the mound):
Nishimura (a pitcher) moves from RF to LF; Hirano moves from RF to LF.
It'll be interesting to see if the Tigers continue to swap Hirano and Nishimura back and forth (depending on this hitter) if the game goes into the 12th.
NOTE: this was apparently the first time the Tigers used a pitcher in the outfield since 8/19/1979 vs Yomiuri at Fukuoka Dome (Yutaka Ikeuchi went from pitching to left and back to pitching; and Kazuyuki Yamamoto went from pitching to right and back to pitching) and the first time the Tigers had to play a pitcher out of position since 5/16/2001 vs Chunichi at Nagoya Dome (Shoji Toyama at first base).
