Hayato Sakamoto (YOM) launched his 7th lead-off homer of the season earlier today in a game against the Hiroshima Carp. That's good for a 2nd place tie with Toshihisa Nishi (2004) on the all-time franchise list. The franchise record of 9 is held by Yoshinobu Takahashi (2007). Sakamoto is the 12th player in NPB history to hit 7 or more lead-off homers in a season.
The home run also happened to be his 29th of the year batting out of the lead-off spot. That breaks the previous franchise record of 28 homers out of the lead-off spot set by Nishi in 2004 and ties the franchise record of 28 home runs hit by a shortstop set by Tomohiro Nioka in 2003.
If Sakamoto can hit another homer before the end of the season, he'll become the first player on the Giants, 22 years or younger, to reach the 30-homer mark since Hideki Matsui in 1996.
