Shinnosuke Abe (YOM) became the third catcher in NPB history to reach the 40 homer mark in a season when he hit a grand slam in the 7th inning of last night's game against the Hiroshima Carp. The other two catchers: Katsuya Nomura (40 or more homers 5 times); and Koichi Tabuchi (40 or more homers 3 times, although really twice as a catcher).
The grand slam was also Abe's 9th of his career. That moves him out of a 2nd place tie with Tatsunori Hara on the franchise all-time list. Sadaharu Oh sits atop the franchise and NPB all-time list with 15.
It was also the Giants' 7th grand slam of the year. One more ties the franchise record for grand slams in a season (set in 1995, 1998, and 2000).
