Six MLB clubs watch Wei-Ying Chen

by on Sep.15, 2010 @ 12:58 pm, under NPB

Sponichi reports that six clubs, including the Yankees and Red Sox, had scouts at the Dragons - Hiroshima game last night to watch Wei-Ying Chen (CHU).

Chen had some problems with consistency in the beginning of the season but seems to have settled over the last few months (5-7, 3.43 ERA, 97 IP, 1.22 WHIP, 7.1 K/9, 2.5 BB/9 before the July; 7-3, 2.54 ERA, 78 IP, 1.12 WHIP, 7.7 K/9, 2.2 BB/9 since July).

Considering how the Red Sox are easily making their investment back on Matsuzaka (and how the Yankees can’t even get Igawa above AAA), expect the Sox to be right in the mix for a big-time name like Chen.

Also, isn’t Chen an international free agent and wasn’t he signed as such by Chunichi?

To be honest, I’m not really sure what’s up with Chen’s contract. The Dragons claimed back during the past off-season that the last contract he signed doesn’t make him a free agent after it expires. And a number of media outlets have mentioned that if he wants to go to the Majors after the current season, he’ll need to be posted.

Incidentally, contracts usually aren’t disclosed to the public, so things you read in the media are usually just educated guesses. Of course, I’m sure there are some clubs that “leak” the information about, but as a general rule, none of it is really official.
