Matt Murton to get a bonus for breaking Ichiro’s NPB record?

by on Sep.25, 2010 @ 2:29 pm, under NPB

The Hanshin Tigers will apparently give Matt Murton a 10M yen bonus if he breaks Ichiro Suzuki's single season NPB hit record of 210.  Actually, the team may give him the bonus regardless of whether or not he breaks Ichiro's record, but it does appear as though they feel good about his chances of breaking it, especially since he only needs 9 hits over the team's final 10 games.

The Tigers are also expected to exercise their second year option on Murton.

It’s probably worth noting that Ichiro set his record during a 130 game season. Not to take anything away from Murton, because he’s been awesome, but he wouldn’t be breaking Ichiro’s record under the same circumstances.

No doubt. I don’t think the other previous 200-hit players would have either — if I’m not mistaken, Alex Ramirez collected his 200th hit during his team’s 139th game and Norichika Aoki collected his 200th hit during his team’s 145th game.

Neither player would have made it to 200.

In 1994, the single season hit record was held by Fumio Fujimura and stood at 191. Ichiro tied the record on 9/11, his 115th game. He then broke the record in his 116th game. Ichiro then got to 200 on 9/20, his 122nd game. His 210th hit came in his 130th game of the season.
