Softbank Hawks PL Champions: Quick News and Notes (9/27 Late Evening)

by on Sep.27, 2010 @ 11:40 pm, under NPB

About 500 fans greeted the Softbank Hawks' players at Fukuoka airport earlier today.

Hiroki Kokubo was surprised to see so many flowers lining the front entrance of Yahoo Dome.  The club also apparently received over 300 congratulatory telegrams since winning the PL and more than 10 barrels of sake.

Hawks' owner Masayoshi Son's dream is apparently to see the MLB's best play a series against the Softbank Hawks at Yahoo Dome.  On a side note: the Sponichi article also mentions that the Hawks spent 500M yen in order to build the Sadaharu Oh Museum in a stadium that costs the team about 5B yen a year to use.

Koji Akiyama's family did not send him words of congratulations when the team won the league out of fear of jinxing him.  Other than that, it seems Akiyama has his hands full reading / replying to all the congratulatory e-mails he's been getting.  On a side note: Akiyama's daughter, Marin, has apparently taken part in a number of amateur golf tournaments.  When the two get together, it seems they just end up talking about golf.

A number of stores in Fukuoka are holding sales commemorating the Hawks League win. Daimura Fukuoka and Fukuoka Parco are holding 3-day sales while Kyushi Aeon is going with a 2-day sale.

And while not directly related to the Hawks becoming champions...

Tadashi Settsu could be converted into a starter for next season and it seems he's interested in giving it a try.

Yuichi Honda tied Yasuyuki Kataoka for the 2010 Pacific League stolen base title.  While the Lions still have another game to play, Kataoka is currently hurt and was taken off the active roster on the 22nd.
