A Sponichi report drops Senichi Hoshino's name as a potential candidate. Said Hoshino, "I haven't heard anything about [the Eagles wanting me], but I guess that means people haven't forgotten about me yet. That's a good thing."
A number of names have been mentioned in the media as possible candidates for the managing position with the Rakuten Eagles. Those names include:
Pitching coach Yoshinori Sato
Ni-gun manager Toru Nimura
Former Seibu Lions manager Osamu Higashio
Former pitcher Masumi Kuwata
Among these four, Nikkan Sports provides reasons for why Higashio and Kuwata might make sense:
Higashio won two league titles while with the Seibu Lions and was also one of the finalists for the Rakuten managing job last year. Higashio also has a connection to Kazuo Matsui. If the Eagles are really serious about Kaz, they might look to Higashio for help.
Kuwata has both MLB and NPB experience. He's also a name that a lot of people know and has also dropped hints along the way that he's interested in teaching / coaching. But he could also be a little more difficult to sign than Higashio.
In the end, the Eagles are looking for manager that can mold a young team into a long-term contender.
