Marines squeeze past Fighters, Dragons win CL title

by on Oct.01, 2010 @ 9:57 pm, under NPB

The Chiba Lotte Marines beat the Orix Buffaloes tonight to leapfrog over the Nippon Ham Fighters and take third place in the Pacific League.  The Marines will now face the Seibu Lions in the First Stage of the Climax Series that begins on 10/9.

The Hanshin Tigers dropped their second straight game and fell into third place in the Central League.  More importantly, the Tigers loss means the Chunichi Dragons clinch first in the CL.  It also means the Swallows are still alive, but by only half a game.

Regarding Orix handing Lotte two freebies and thereby making a mockery of the entire pennant race, does anyone know if the decision to put a bunch of ageing nobodies in the lineup was Okada’s alone or did upper management force him to do it? Also, was the decision based on a wish to help Lotte or does Orix have an issue with Nippon Ham?

The Orix players were largely younger, not older, so the wish was to get non-first team guys some experience. Okada was managing to win those games, if you had watched them you would know that.

What manager wouldn’t give their less experienced guys a chance once the season is over?

At least the end of the Pacific League season had some drama. The Central League climax teams were essentially decided in June.

Steve: I didn’t realize you were in my living room. How do you know what game I watched? Anyway, I agree with you that Okada seemed to be managing to win. That is why I am wondering if was actually upper management that made the decision to give the playoff spot to Lotte.
