The steering committee for the World Baseball Classic (WBC) met in New York on the 5th to discuss a number of possible changes to the tournament format.
Currently on the block:
...creating a qualifying round that will be played out amongst 16 teams split into 4 blocks in the fall of 2011. The 16 teams will include the four teams that could not secure a win during the 2009 WBC: Chinese Taipei, Canada, South Africa, and Panama. The top teams from each block will then proceed to the first round of the 2013 WBC.
...moving away from the current double elimination (1st and 2nd round) and single elimination (semfinals, finals) format. No mention of what the alternatives could actually be.
And it seems the 2nd WBC ended US$18M in the black.
