Yasutomo Kubo wins 14th, reaches 200-inning mark

by on Oct.07, 2010 @ 4:15 am, under NPB

Yasutomo Kubo (HAN) tossed a complete game shutout against the Yokohama Bay Stars last night for his 14th victory of the season (and first shutout of the year).  Kubo also became the first Tiger pitcher to reach the 200-inning mark (202.1 IP) since Kei Igawa in 2006 (209.0 IP).

In slightly older team-related news:

24-year-old pitcher Yusuke Kuroda is thinking about converting to a position player and started working out as such on Tuesday.  At this point, a position for him to play at has not been decided and the team will watch him closely before making a final decision on the conversion.

Kuroda has no Ichi-gun experience and has had problems with his right shoulder over the years.

On Tuesday night:

Takashi Toritani became the 262nd player to record 1,000 career hits.  The 1,000th hit came in the third inning off Yakult Swallows' pitcher Yoshitaka Hashimoto.

Kenji Jojima went 4-for-5 and ended Tuesday night with 165 hits on the year.  That broke Furuta Atsuya's CL record for most hits in a season by catcher (164 hits in 1997).  Jojima now holds the record in both leagues (he set the PL record of 182 hits in 2003).
