Any idea how this would work in terms of absorbing salary? This is different than Johjima who voluntarily walked away from his contract. This allowed both sides – Seattle and Johjima – to terminate the existing MLB contract. In this case, I would think Kawakami would still demand his $7million and I am not sure how much the Braves are willing to absorb. Plus, what do the Braves get in return? Anything? I think they just ask someone to take on Kawakami’s salary and they just call it a loss.

Your guess would be as good as mine at this point. One thing is for certain: I don’t know of any NPB team that can (or wants to) pay a $6.67M salary. That means the Braves would have to eat a large portion of salary.

The article I linked to actually mentions that the Braves might be willing to eat about $3M of the $6.67M remaining on the contract. That means any NPB team that wants Kawakami will be responsible for paying a salary that’s worth about 300M yen. In terms of amount, that’s Darvish territory.
