Softbank Hawks decide not to sign Jonathan Plefka

by on Nov.10, 2010 @ 5:27 pm, under NPB

The Softbank Hawks announced that they will not be signing Jonathan Plefka to an Ikusei contract.  Seems the club felt that Plefka wouldn't be ready for Ichi-gun next year and would instead require about 2-3 years of instruction.  Apparently, there were also issues with Plefka's pick-off move and his ability to pitch with runners on base.

In other club news:

It seems the Hawks would like to meet with free agent players as soon as possible.  Two potential free agents the Hawks are expected to meet with are Toru Hosokawa and Seiichi Uchikawa (assuming they don't re-sign with their respective clubs before the 18th).  Nikkan Sports figures the Hawks will offer Hosokawa a contract that could be worth 200M and Uchikawa 300M (after award bonuses).

I don’t understand why Softbank are after Hosokawa. He is so similar (and is not better than) to Tanoue, in my opinion. The combination of Tanuoe and Yamazaki is probably not a satisfaction, but not bad though. The addition of Hosokawa will not bring any improvement. Besides, Yamashita will be able to play in ichi-gun in next 2-4 years. They’d better to keep those money for keeping Tamura and going after Kuroda.
