Hisashi Iwakuma returning to the Rakuten Eagles next year?

by on Nov.22, 2010 @ 11:57 am, under MLB, NPB

As mentioned here yesterday, Hisashi Iwakuma apparently wasn't happy with the direction talks were heading in with the Oakland Athletics.  Nikkan Sports now reports that talks between the two sides have cooled and that there's a very good chance Iwakuma will be returning to the Rakuten Eagles in 2011.

The San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser also tweets that talks have broken off:

Hisashi Iwakuma talks have broken off, according to major-league and industry sources.

I'm wondering what happens now if Iwakuma really does return to the Eagles next season next season.  Not only do they stand to lost the that posting money, they'll also need to give Iwakuma a 300M+ yen salary -- two things they probably weren't, ahem, banking on.

He does (or rather did, since that window is now closed) have a domestic option, but I’m fairly certain that he didn’t file the necessary paperwork to exercise that option.

It also wouldn’t make much sense for him to exercise the option, especially if he wants to become an international FA next year.
