Nikkan Sports has posted the opening comments from Hisashi Iwakuma's press conference earlier today.
I, Hisashi Iwakuma, appear here today to announce that I will be playing with the Rakuten Eagles next year. After speaking with the team, I was posted to the Majors but could not arrive at a deal with the Oakland Athletics. A lot of things were mentioned in the press, myself and my family were a bit confused as to what was going on. After receiving words of encouragement from fans, I myself felt like returning to the Eagles to play next season and mentioned this to my agent. I firmly believe that this decision was not incorrect. It's unfortunate things didn't work out, but I am grateful to the Athletics for submitting a winning bid.
Your reason for giving up?
After hearing the reports of their first proposed offer in the news, I wondered if they really needed me. I did not make any demands.
Your thoughts now?
I had a month to think things over and now I feel I want to do my best to help the Eagles win next year. I spoke to [Senichi] Hoshino over the phone and he told me he wanted to win a championship together. I also received warm comments when I told the players in the locker room. I firmly believe my decision isn't incorrect.
On problems with the posting system.
I don't really know all the details, but I'm grateful that it has become an issue the JPBPA is now discussing. I'd like to see things improve.
Your thoughts on next season.
I was a little confused at first, but now I just want to have a good time playing next year. I'd like to secure my spot in the starting rotation, give inexperienced players advice, and help make this team stronger.
Jiji Press has the following comments from the press conference:
On negotiations with the Athletics not working out.
It was a rough journey, but all I do was watch. A lot of things were mentioned in the media and I felt confused, but I don't think things ended badly.
You didn't try to push things through?
I wasn't really sure if they needed me after I heard about the first negotiations. And then as I watched / heard about the negotiations, I was deciding I wanted to stay.
On people saying you were a posting system sacrifice (or a casualty of the posting system).
Things ended like this, but the JPBPA is going to provide some support. I don't really know what needs to be improved, but I'm hopeful things will get better.
On earning your international FA option next season.
I still have my dream, but I'll need to think about things again once I earn the option. I really can't say anything right now.
On playing for the Eagles again next season.
For the sake of Hoshino that is looking forward to me playing for the team next season, I want to help pull this team together.
I also found an NHK news brief of the press conference over at Youtube. It isn't an official upload, so it might come down at any time.
