Via Nikkan Sports: The St. Petersburg Times' Marc Topkin notes that while the Rays have been connected to players like Hideki Matsui, Jason Giambi, and Manny Ramirez, they likely won't pull the trigger on any deals until January (holding out until prices drop a little more).
That may not matter though, as the Bay Area News Group's Joe Stiglich tweets the A's "could be close to an agreement." And Sports Hochi mentions that it's probably a 1-year deal worth somewhere between US$5-6M and that an announcement could be made early this week.
Daisuke Matsuzaka told reporters he was glad that the Red Sox signed Carl Crawford and traded for Adrian Gonzalez. He also said he realized he was at a crossroads right now and really needed to step up his game. His strengthening program this off-season currently breaks down to 70% lower body, 20% upper body, and 10% shoulder. It seems he also plans to head to Honolulu for his training this winter -- he's avoiding Arizona because he doesn't want any distractions (it seems over 10 Japanese players met with Matsuzaka last year at Athletes' Performance).
