Yomiuri Giants News and Notes: December 21, 2010

Sanspo notes that while left field is Alex Ramirez's position to lose (at least for the time being), center and right are wide open.  Sports Hochi adds that the Giants have 7 foreign pitchers for 3 spots on the active roster.  One of those posts could end up going to Jonathan Albaladejo, if he shows he's capable of closing out games during spring camp.

According to Sports Hochi, Ramirez is going on a "vegetarian diet" (vegetables and chicken) in order to lose extra weight during the off-season.

Ramirez's ideal weight during the season has been between 98 and 100kg.  For next season, Ramirez is hoping to drop (and keep) his weight down to the mid-90s, which is where he played when he first joined the Yakult Swallows 10 years ago.

Ramirez also apparently added weights to his daily routine on 12/3 (2 hours of weights every day plus 1 hour of running) and will be using lighter bats next season -- the two bats he carried this season (two Zett bats weight 910 and 920 grams) will be 10 grams lighter.

Yasunari Takagi is hoping to win a spot in the starting rotation next season.  To help him reach that goal, he's purchased his own mini digital video camera to help him analyze his delivery / mechanics.

===

Hideki Asai will be working out with Michihiro Ogasawara in January.

===

Tetsuya Matsumoto was using an 890 gram bat through to the 2010 season.  It seems he plans on carrying 5 bats with him next season -- he placed an order with Mizuno for 5 bats in increments of 10 grams, beginning at 900 grams -- and decide on which to use based on how he's feeling.

Shoki Kasahara threw 30 pitches to a standing catcher in the bullpen at Giants stadium today.  He also spent about 2 hours in the weight room.

Atsushi Fukumoto spent about 4 hours working out (running, taking grounders, BP) today at Giants stadium.
