Yomiuri Giants News and Notes: December 23, 2010

Hideki Asai is planning on giving himself a buzz cut because it seems to bring him some luck: when he buzzed his hair in 2007, he ended up winning a career high 8 games; when he buzzed his hair in 2008, he set a new career of 9 wins.

He'll be getting his hair buzzed on 1/30/2011 (down to 9mm), the last day before spring camp.

Tetsuya Utsumi told reporters on Wednesday that the new NPB regulation ball felt like a cross between the old NPB ball and the WBC ball.  He added that his off-speed pitches with the WBC ball had a lot of movement and that the new ball provided similar results.

Utsumi is also working on improving both his stamina / conditioning and his velocity this winter.

Said Utsumi, "I want win a spot in the starting rotation and stay there the entire season.  I also want to consistently throw in the 140km/h range."

Back fully healed from surgery, Yoshinobu Takahashi plans on taking BP from his first day of training in Okinawa (scheduled to start on 1/10/2011).

On Tuesday, Utsumi took part in a TV recording for FujiTV's Uchikuru!? (ウチくる!?).

Genki Kawano worked out at Giants Stadium on Wednesday (he's taking part of winter camp) and did some running, took some fielding practice, and worked on his hitting.  Kawano will be joining Shinnosuke Abe and Hayato Sakamoto for training in Guam in January next year.

The winter camp that began on the 12/2 will end on Thursday (12/23).
