Hideki Matsui: I can hit Takahashi with my eyes closed

by on Dec.30, 2010 @ 1:10 pm, under MLB

Seems Hideki Matsui hasn't been answering phone calls from Hisanori Takahashi.  And the chill apparently started after Takahashi spoke of how his past record against Matsui meant nothing because of the situations they took place in and that he was looking forward to facing Matsui and doing whatever it took to get him out (including pitching inside).  Takahashi also apparently left the following message on Matsui's answering machine: Hey Godzy, how you doing?  (Godzy is short for Godzilla)

Matsui fired back on Wednesday (perhaps in jest) when he told reporters he could probably hit Takahashi with his eyes closed.

All this might be in good fun, but regardless, it should be interesting to see how the two react to each on the field next season.

Incidentally, Takahashi spent about 3.5 hours working out on Wednesday and told reporters that really enjoyed living in the US this year, through both the good AND bad.  Takahashi has been busy this off-season with various events and TV appearances but has made it a point to make time for practicing.

And about 250 people turned their attention to Matsui when they saw him in the airport arrival lobby on Wednesday.  Matsui also answered a number of questions (via Sponichi):

You're back in Japan after a year.

It's been a while.  I'm playing for a new team now, so I feel a little different than compared to previous years.

Your thoughts on the past year?

It's unfortunate, but the [Angels] couldn't win.  And I also joined the [Angels] with a lot of expectations.  And I don't think I met those expectations.  So in that sense, it was a disappointing season for me as well.

Your thoughts of agreeing to a deal before the end of the year?

I think it was good that things were settled early.  I'm already thinking about next season.  So in that sense, I feel myself moving / looking forward (instead of backward).

Will you be going full out during spring training?

I'd like for that to happen.  But I really don't know at this point.

Your goals for next year?

I'll be playing for another new team, and they'll have certain expectations for me as well.  I just want to make sure I apply myself 100%.  I'd like to have that kind of [satisfying] season.
