Takumi Akiyama attended the Saijo Little League and Senior League New Year Ceremony today and told the kids that the was thinking about donating 12 baseballs (about 1,000 yen) to the leagues for each strikeout he recorded, once he managed to secure a spot on the active roster.
Said Akiyama, "First I want to give by playing well. A full season at Ichi-gun. ... I haven't been able to give anything back yet... I've always wanted to donate baseball equipment. My goal is to donate 12 baseballs for every strikeout I record. ... When I played in the Little Leagues and in high school, we used these beat up baseballs. When you turn pro, you get a fresh set of baseball each day. I feel really lucky. ... I want to focus on strikeouts. And I feel great when I can record a strikeout using my fastball."
