General pitching coach Kazuhisa Kawaguchi told reporters yesterday that the team will probably bring about 20 pitchers to Ichi-gun spring camp and that 6-7 of those spots will be open to foreign players.
Hayato Sakamoto is working on his throwing using a method that was introduced to him by head coach Kaoru Okazaki. And Okazaki apparently picked it up when he spent time with the New York Yankees in 2005 as a visiting coach in training. The method basically involves players sitting on the ground while playing catch at a distance of about 10 meters. By sitting down, you end up focusing more on your throws and on catching the ball. The hope is that the exercise will improve Sakamoto's throwing ability. About half of Sakamoto's errors were reportedly due to throwing problems.
Sakamoto also spent sometime working on his footwork while throwing as well.
Yoshiyuki Kamei worked out for about 6 hours on Thursday. He told reporters that he plans on taking a camera with him to spring camp so that he can record his at bats and dissect them later on.
