Hiroshima Carp Spring Camp News and Notes: February 3, 2011

Dennis Sarfate threw 40 pitches (including off-speed pitches) in the bullpen today.  Yoshikazu Kura caught the session and told reporters that Sarfate threw as hard as Colby Lewis, but had more movement.

The first block of spring camp ended for the Carp todayKenjiro Nomura told reporters he was concerned about players getting injured during the first block due to pushing too hard or being under-prepared and was glad no one got hurt.  The second block of camp will include more game-like practices like situational BP.


Kiyoshi Toyoda threw 50 pitches in the bullpen today (30 to a standing catcher and 20 to a squatting catcher).  It was second bullpen session in as many days.


Hiroshima announced today that Mike Schultz will be arriving in Okinawa on the 4th and will join the team for spring camp beginning on the 5th.  Schultz missed the first block of spring camp due to the flu and got the green light from doctors.


Yuya Fukui (1st round) continues to take it easy -- he still hasn't thrown in the bullpen and is spending most of his time runningFour other rookie pitchers did toss bullpen sessions on Wednesday: Yuki Iwami (3rd round) threw 70 pitches; Masaya Kanemaru (4th round) threw 58 pitches; Yuki Tsurumoto (7th round) threw 60 pitches; and Kyohei Nakamura (2nd round) threw 42 pitches.
