Hanshin Tigers Spring Camp News and Notes: February 5, 2011

by on Feb.05, 2011 @ 2:26 pm, under NPB

This post will be updated throughout the day.

===== 2/5 @ 10:32pm

About 2,800 fans showed up at Ginoza today.  The Arai brothers also spent some time coaching 13 little league teams.

===

Jojima swung the bat 197 times today (between soft-toss BP and BP in the cages).

Said Jojima, "It's the same kind of movement as when throwing, no problems with my knee.  I could probably start hitting outside if necessary."

Jojima also did some running and played some catch today.

===

Tomoaki Kanemoto took BP against a machine today, a first since the start of spring camp.  If Kanemoto doesn't hit any bumps in the road during the second block of camp, he might be able to take outdoor BP during the third block of camp.

Kanemoto also played catch at a max distance of about 40 meters.

===

Shinta Hifumi (2nd round) threw 32 pitches to a standing catcher today.  This was Hifumi's first bullpen session since 1/4.

===

Hiroyuki Kobayashi threw 44 pitches to a squatting catcher today, including 8 straight change-ups.  This was the first time he threw the change during spring camp.

===== 2/5 @ 2:26pm

Kenji Jojima told reporters yesterday that he plans on starting up his BP workouts by hitting off a tee, from the left-side, for the first three days.

And today, after taking soft-toss BP from both the left and right side, Jojima stepped into the cage (against a machine that throws curves) and took a total 15 swings from both the left and right side.

===

Akinobu Mayumi told reporters that he plans to keep starting pitching information for practice games under wraps during spring camp this year (that is, no advance notices on who will be starting).  Seems like he wants to work on making sure information like that doesn't leak out.

===

Takashi Toritani's 2011 Sanspo Tigers' Promise: to play in every inning of every game and to win a championship.

===

Yasutomo Kubo couldn't make good on Sanspo's 2010 Tigers' Promise last season (to hit at least one sac fly), so he ended up being a photographer for the day yesterday.

===

Shinta Hifumi (2nd round) will likely get the green light to toss a bullpen session sometime during the second block of spring camp (which began today).

===

Fumiya Araki (5th round) spent some time working out in the afternoon on his day off yesterday in preparation for the second block of spring camp.

===

Owner Shinya Sakai is scheduled to arrive in Aki, Kochi today in order to begin his visit with the Ni-gun club.  He's set to have dinner with the Ni-gun staff tonight and will watch the players practice tomorrow.  Sakai will then move on to Ginoza, Okinawa on the 11th to see how things are going at the Ichi-gun camp.
