Hanshin Tigers Spring Camp News and Notes: February 6, 2011

by on Feb.06, 2011 @ 2:04 pm, under NPB

This post will be updated throughout the day.

===== 2/6 @ 10:23pm

Six pitchers, including Ikketsu Sho and Tatsuya Kojima, tossed BP today.  Each pitcher faced 2 batters over a 5 minute period.  Ikketsu threw 56 pitches and surrendered 2 could-be hits; Kojima threw 44 pitches and gave up 4 could-be hits.  Kojima also accidentally hit Katsuhiko Saka in the head; he was fine.

Takahiro Arai took 54 swings during BP and hit 12 over the fence.  Arai also stayed back after general practice for extra fielding practice (about 45 minutes) and running.  He also spent some time signing autographs before leaving.

===

Akinobu Mayumi watched over Tsuyoshi Shimoyanagi's bullpen session today.  Shimoyanagi threw about 40 pitches.

===

High School rugby coach Yoshiharu Yamaguchi dropped by Aki, Kochi camp today and met with Jojima.   The last time the two met was back in 1997 when Jojima was a member of the Daiei Hawks.

===== 2/6 @ 2:04pm

Matt Murton took 64 swings of the bat during BP yesterday and hit 9 over the fence.  He also took some extra BP in the cages after general practice yesterday.

Murton and Craig Brazell took lunchtime BP today (second time during camp so far this year): Murton swung the bat 83 times and collected 55 could-be hits (including 14 that went over the fence); Brazell swung the bat 85 times and hit 14 over the fence.

===

Takashi Toritani took 90 swings during lunchtime BP yesterday and hit 13 over the fence and 14 up against the fence.  Seems Akinobu Mayumi feels Toritani is capable of batting .300 with 30 homers out of the three spot in the line-up.

In addition to the 90 swings during lunchtime BP, Toritani also took 66 swings during regular BP and then an extra 229 swings in the cages.

===

A little more on Kenji Jojima's 197-swing BP workout yesterday: while hitting the ball off a tee using a practice bat, Jojima swung the bat 102 times from the left side and 80 times from the right side; against a machine throwing curves, Jojima swung the bat 9 times from the left and 6 times from the right.

===

Tomoaki Kanemoto took 61 swings in the cages yesterday (about 15 minutes).  He also played catch at a max distance of 40 meters (55 tosses).

===

Diaki Enokida (1st round) is scheduled to toss BP on the 7th.

===

Takumi Akiyama threw about 50 pitches in the bullpen yesterday (squatting catcher).

===

Shinjiro Hiyama took 63 swings of the bat during BP yesterday.  He didn't hit any over the fence and seemed to have a hard time pulling the trigger (he didn't swing at 19 pitches).

===

Kyuji Fujikawa did some shadow pitching in the bullpen yesterday in preparation for a bullpen session today -- 73 imaginary tosses over about a 30 minute period.  About 50 people watched.

===

The Tigers will be holding a meeting on the 8th to finalize their protected player list.
