Nippon Ham Fighters Spring Camp News and Notes: February 6, 2011

This post will be updated throughout the day.

===== 2/6 @ 9:17pm

Obispo made an appearance during BP today and threw 44 pitches to Shinya Tsuruoka and Shota Ono while surrendering 3 could-be hits.

Masataka Nashida appeared impressed with the outing and said, "He threw some pretty hard to hit pitches.  He's got more than enough to get batters out."

Darvish wasn't scheduled to do anything throwing today.  But after some running on the secondary field, Darvish played catch with his left hand, at a distance of about 60 meters.

===== 2/6 @ 12:25pm

Yu Darvish threw only 18 strikes during his 53-pitch bullpen session yesterday (he threw the session assuming there was a right-handed batter and worked on hitting the outside corners).

Said Darvish about his session, "I threw a couple of decent pitches so it was an ok session.  People around me are telling me that I'm [throwing] better than last year, so that makes me happy."

Incidentally, it seems Darvish is trying to make sure Wirfin Obispo stays in shape.  He told reporters yesterday that while Obispo was a nice guy, he also tended to slacked off when no one was looking.

Sho Nakata hit two balls that were estimated to have traveled around 150 meters during BP yesterday.  The shots came off Yusuke Uemura (Nakata swung the bat 14 times against Uemura and hit 4 over the fence).

Said Nakata, "Distance doesn't matter.  I was just trying to be conscious of my swing and making sure to use all parts of the field."
