Hanshin Tigers Spring Camp News and Notes: February 9, 2011

by on Feb.09, 2011 @ 12:15 pm, under NPB

This post will be updated throughout the day.

The Tigers have the day off today.

===== 2/10 @ 1:46am

Shunsuke Fujikawa, Kohei Shibata, Masashi Nohara, Issei Morita, and Yamato all worked out for about an hour during their day off today (BP machine, running).

===

In addition to tossing his first 100+ pitch bullpen session yesterday this spring, Minoru Iwata also took 294 swings in the cages (including bunts).  There's also a chance he'll be able to toss BP sometime during the third block of spring camp (which begins tomorrow).

===== 2/9 @ 12:15pm

Veteran pitchers will begin tossing BP tomorrow (start of the third block of camp).  Two BP session are scheduled for the third block.  A round of situational BP will also be held tomorrow.

===

The Tigers have apparently finalized their 28-man protected player list and will likely give the Chiba Lotte Marines the list during a 12-team meeting on the 10th.

===

Tomoaki Kanemoto continued with his indoor workouts yesterday (soft-toss BP and throwing into a net).  He also did some running on the secondary field (he ran two 200 meter dashes).  As of now, he is expected to start taking BP outdoors during the third block of camp, possibly on the 11th.

===

Matt Murton took 74 swings of the bat during lunchtime BP yesterday and hit 9 over the fence.

===

Katsuhiko Saka will likely get the start in center for a practice game against the Yakult Swallows on the 13th.  It would seem that Saka may have a slight lead over Shunsuke Fujikawa so far during spring camp (Saka has spent more time in CF during fielding practice and has also done better with the bat during BP).

===

Keisuke Kano went 2-for-2 off Hirokazu Shiranita during situational BP yesterday (Kano is also vying for a spot in the OF).

===

Takahiro Arai stayed back for extra practice yesterday.  He first took extra fielding practice (about 45 minutes) with Akinobu Mayumi hitting grounders to him.  After that, he spent another 40 minutes taking 156 swings of the bat.

===

Shinjiro Hiyama took 78 swings during BP yesterday and hit 3 over the fence.

===

Tsuyoshi Shimoyanagi has been working on throwing a shuto to the inside corner against right-handed batters.
