Daisuke Matsuzaka threw 43 pitches in the bullpen (sitting catcher) on the 11th (12th in Japan). Because of rain, Matsuzaka had to toss the session indoors in the batting cage bullpen.
Theo Epstein also had a chance to watch Matsuzaka practice on the 10th and appeared to be impressed with Matsuzaka's conditioning.
Hideki Okajima and Junichi Tazawa also worked out on the 11th.
Yoshinori Tateyama threw 25 pitches in the bullpen on the 11th (12th in Japan). He also mixed in his off-speed pitches and worked on keeping his pitches down. Tateyama arrived in the US on the 7th and immediately checked into Surprise, AZ. Practices have started around 9am and usually last about an hour (no warm-ups).
Said Tateyama, "I'm still finding my way about, but I'm trying to have fun while I learn the ropes and make friends. ... In order to leave my mark in games, I want to workout everyday. ... I think if I toss three more bullpen sessions, I'll be ready to pitch in games."
Regarding rumors that he's having a fling with NHK reporter Sae Nakarai - "Both she and I have made announcements that this is false information. I'm just going to ignore the noise."
